Keeping It Green
An Environmental Leader Among Rockport ME Hotels and Maine Resorts
At the Samoset Resort, we are committed to setting an example among Rockport, ME hotels and resorts when it comes to preserving the pristine beauty of coastal Maine. In an effort to keep our renowned waters intact for generations to come, our eco-friendly resort has adopted a variety of sustainable practices aimed to reduce water and energy consumption while increasing resort-wide recycling opportunities.
The Samoset has been a certified participant in the Maine Department of Environmental Protection’s Environmental Leader program since 2008, and continues to serve as an innovator among Rockport, ME hotels. We have also partnered with likeminded organizations that have a demonstrated history of environmental conservation as we implement new green programs throughout our hotel operations.
By working together, the Samoset can help keep the “Green” in the Pine Tree State.
Some of the recent green initiatives at the Samoset Resort include:
The Samoset Resort’s Composting Policy
One of the sustainable practices we are most proud of at the Samoset is our composting policy, which benefits our resort, our guests and the local community. Organic food waste from the kitchen is sent to Earthly Fertilizers, a local farm located in Appleton. The food is then converted to compost and supplied to area farms as soil amendments for their crops and animal feed. A portion of the compost is also returned to the resort and used for our own flower and herb gardens. Executive Chef Tim Pierce and his culinary staff use these flowers and herbs to decorate our plates and complement our signature dishes, which also showcase fresh ingredients from local farms, artisans and fishermen whenever possible. The Samoset’s composting program is a prime example of how Maine resorts and community programs can work together to reduce the waste in our landfills while providing resources that support local farms.
